La structure informationnelle de la phrase y ordonne les éléments selon, entre autres, les notions de topique (ou thème) et de focus (ou rhème).

Pour aller vite, le thème est ce dont on parle (le topique), et le rhème ce qu'on en dit (le focus, l'information nouvelle).

Lorsque toute le phrase est constituée d'information nouvelle (réponse à la question Que s'est-il passé?), le focus est répandu sur toute la phrase, et on obtient une structure informationnelle plate.

En breton, comme en hongrois ou en allemand, la structure informationnelle a une lourde influence sur la structure syntaxique, car elle influe sur l'ordre des mots de la phrase, surtout dans la périphérie gauche.
