La portée est le domaine de la phrase sur laquelle porte un élément fonctionnel.

Les éléments ayant portée sont: les quantifieurs, les particules interrogatives, les adverbes, la négation, le focus...

Certains éléments n'apparaissent que sous la portée d'un autre, comme les items de polarité négative.


La portée sémantique contredit parfois des éléments morphologiques. En (1), le diminutif a portée sur un élément temporel dans la phrase, en dehors du composé morphologique auquel il appartient.

un.DIM quelconque R vient un fois le temps
'Un petit quelqu'un (quelques rares personnes) vient de temps en temps.' Trégorrois, Gros (1984:174)
