Le nom gwastell dénote un 'gâteau'.

On reconnaît le suffixe -ell d'adoption des emprunts au mots du français finissant en -eau.
nombre
Le breton standard montre le pluriel interne gwastilli. On trouve aussi le pluriel interne gwestell, ou le pluriel régulier -où de gwastelloù.

Il y a plusieurs concurrents sémantiques, comme le nom kouign. Delanoy (2010) donne comme emprunté au gallo gatew 'gâteau' le nom collectif haut-vannetais kateù 'gâteaux', au singulier dérivé katiùenn.
