La structure informationnelle ordonne les éléments de la phrase suivant, entre autres, les notions de topique (ou thème) et de focus (ou rhème). Pour aller vite, le thème est ce dont on parle (le topique), et le rhème ce qu'on en dit (le focus, l'information nouvelle).
En breton, comme en hongrois ou en allemand, la structure informationnelle a une lourde influence sur la syntaxe, car elle influe sur l'ordre des mots de la phrase.
